Closely modeled on Schubert’s famous Shepherd on the Rock, it tells the story of what really happened on that rock. The plot is ridiculous; it includes singing sheep, a near-sighted shepherdess, her lover (a butcher), and a sheep hair-care specialist. The soprano sings the role of the Shepherdess. The other roles are not sung (except for a brief sheep soli).
